Austin Sporting Events & Teams

May 4, 2017 | Austin, TX City Guide

Don’t tell Austinites that they don’t have any professional sports teams, because if you say such an offensive comment, they will retort with two letters: U&T.

The University of Texas at Austin

The University of Texas has been producing so many professional athletes that people in Austin consider them a professional organization.

Though the basketball and baseball teams are incredible in their own right, when people think UT, they think football first. The football team is highly regarded as one of the most prestigious college football programs in the country and, valued at $805 million, they are more valuable than some NFL teams. The second-most winning college football team of all time, they have won 27 bowl games, 32 conference championships, and four national championships.

The Stadium

Games are played at Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium, right on campus. There are parking lots available, but you better get there early to snag a spot. There is also a shuttle (Longhorns Express) that picks up fans at two locations: Barton Creek Mall and the Intramural Fields. Here will give you the full rundown in regards to parking and transportation.

Bags are ok as long as they are not larger than 12" x 12" x 18". Also prohibited: Banners, flags, flag poles, selfie sticks, signs, umbrellas, etc.

Basketball games are played at the Frank Erwin Center and baseball games are played at UFCU Disch–Falk Field.

These guys are practically a professional football team, and Texans would sure agree with me…

And then there’s everything else

In the spirit of fun, athletics, and keeping Austin weird, the Austin Sol is a professional ultimate frisbee franchise in the American Ultimate Disc League. The team plays home games at various locations around Austin from April through July.

The Round Rock Express is an AAA minor league baseball team part of the Texas Rangers organization. Games are played up in Round Rock, north of Austin.

For the roller derby fanatics out there, the Texas Roller Derby has monthly and bi-monthly games January - October and the Texas Rollergirls are a nonprofit committed to spreading the good word that is Women’s Flat Track Derby. (Note: you probably don’t want to add that you’re a roller derby fanatic on your Tinder profile, unless you’re into that sort of thing. In which case you should rock those leathers and chains to your heart's desire, and be sure to tag @EvilTickets in your next, somewhat questionable, Instagram pic.)

Lastly, the Austin Spurs are a D-League basketball team under the San Antonio Spurs franchise and the Texas Stars are in the American Hockey League, an affiliate of the NHL squad Dallas Stars.

So, while there are no major league sports teams, there are plenty sporting events in Austin to choose from.
