The A's have officially left the Coliseum and Oakland, and it still stings. For decades, the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum was one of the most unique - and yeah, most rundown - stadiums in professional sports. But it was their rundown stadium, and the fans who showed up loved every concrete, leaky, possum-infested inch of it.
Oakland A's fans are some of the most passionate people in baseball, full stop. The Drumming Section in the bleachers brought noise that big-market teams would kill for. The tailgating in the parking lot was legendary - a party that started before noon for a 7 PM game. These people didn't just attend games. They made the games worth attending.
The A's are in transition now, headed to Sacramento temporarily before a planned move to Las Vegas. But wherever this franchise lands, the spirit of Oakland baseball follows. Three consecutive World Series titles in the early 70s, the Bash Brothers era, Moneyball - this franchise has produced some of the most memorable moments and characters in baseball history.
If you catch the A's at their temporary home or eventually in Vegas, know this: the fans who travel with this team are the real deal. They remember Billy Beane before Brad Pitt played him. They remember Rickey Henderson being Rickey Henderson. And they'll tell you all about it over a beer in the parking lot. A's fans earned their stripes, and no relocation changes that.
