Lucas Oil Stadium is a gorgeous facility. The retractable roof and massive window on the north end that opens to give you a view of the downtown Indianapolis skyline - it's one of the best-designed stadiums in the NFL. When that window is open and the November sun is streaming in, this place feels like a football cathedral with natural lighting.
Colts fans carry the legacy of Peyton Manning like a badge of honor. Eighteen was a god in this city, and the Sunday night games when he was slinging it at Lucas Oil were some of the best atmospheres in the NFL. The Andrew Luck era was a wild ride, and now the franchise is building again. Whatever era you catch the Colts in, the fans show up with energy.
The tailgate around Lucas Oil is solid, and the downtown location makes it incredibly walkable. The lots on South Street fill up early with grills and cornhole games, but the real pregame move is hitting up the bars on Georgia Street - it's basically a pedestrian boulevard of restaurants and pubs that leads right to the stadium. Kilroy's is the spot.
Before the game, St. Elmo Steak House is an Indy institution - their shrimp cocktail has horseradish so strong it'll clear your sinuses for the entire game. After the game, Mass Ave and Fountain Square have the nightlife and craft brewery scene you need. Indianapolis might fly under the radar as an NFL city, but Lucas Oil Stadium is a top-tier venue and the game-day experience proves it every Sunday.
