STS9 basically invented a genre and then spent twenty-five years perfecting it while everyone else was still figuring out what to call it. Before "livetronica" was even a word, these guys were in Atlanta fusing electronic production with live instrumentation, creating this sound that made jam fans and EDM fans realize they actually liked the same thing all along. That kind of bridge-building is rare and STS9 deserves credit for it.
David Phipps on keys, Hunter Brown on guitar, Zach Velmer on drums - every member of this band operates on a different level of musicianship. Their shows are less "concert" and more "guided sonic journey" - long, evolving sets that build and release and build again, taking you through deep electronic grooves, spacey ambient passages, and full-on dance party breakdowns that make the whole room move as one. If you've ever been to a show where you completely lost track of time and suddenly two hours have passed and you wish there were two more, that's the STS9 experience distilled.
They've been doing this since 1998 and the live show has only gotten tighter and more refined. Albums like "When the Dust Settles" and "The Universe Inside" are great on headphones, but seeing them live is where the real magic happens. The lighting design is always next-level (seriously, their light shows are famous in the live music world for good reason), and there's this beautiful moment at every STS9 show where the groove locks in and the entire crowd just melts into it together. Pure unity through bass and beats. Their influence on the live electronic scene is hard to overstate - countless artists cite them as inspiration for breaking down the barrier between electronic production and live performance.
If you're into music that makes you move, think, and feel all at the same time, STS9 is non-negotiable. Find upcoming dates on Evil Tickets and prepare yourself for a proper journey.
