Citi Field is sitting right there in Flushing, Queens, and it's a much better stadium than people give it credit for. The Jackie Robinson Rotunda entrance is stunning - a massive glass facade honoring the man who changed everything. Inside, the sightlines are great, the concourses are wide, and the Mets have quietly built one of the better food experiences in baseball.
Mets fans are a special breed. They'll tell you all about '86, they'll curse about '07 and '08, and they'll never - ever - let you forget that they exist in the same city as the Yankees and choose this team anyway. That's love. Real, messy, complicated, occasionally heartbreaking love. And it makes the atmosphere at Citi Field electric when the team is rolling.
The food situation is legitimately outstanding. Shake Shack has a stand with a dedicated line that wraps around the concourse. Pat LaFrieda's steak sandwich is a must. For something uniquely Queens, the Taiwanese fried chicken from an outpost of a local Flushing spot hits hard. You're in the most diverse borough in the world - the food reflects that.
Before the game, take the 7 train from Manhattan and get off at Mets-Willets Point. It's the quintessential New York sports experience - packed subway car, everyone in blue and orange, trash talk flying. After the game, hop back on the 7 and you're in Manhattan in 30 minutes. Or stay in Queens and hit up the restaurants on Roosevelt Avenue. Either way, you win.
