Climate Pledge Arena holds about 17,151 for hockey and is built on the footprint of the original KeyArena at Seattle Center, which hosted the NBA SuperSonics before their relocation and stood vacant for years. Amazon's naming rights deal came with commitments to net-zero carbon operations, and the building's sustainability features have been a consistent part of its identity since opening. The rain-forest roof - which preserves the original 1962 arena roof structure as a historical landmark while rebuilding the entire building below it - is an architectural oddity that works in a distinctly Seattle way.
Seattle Center is the cluster of public buildings including the Space Needle, Chihuly Garden and Glass, the Museum of Pop Culture, and the Pacific Science Center that occupies the former 1962 World's Fair site. The neighborhood around the arena has food and bar options, and Lower Queen Anne south of the Seattle Center campus has become the default pregame neighborhood for Kraken games with higher density dining along Queen Anne Avenue N and the surrounding streets. The Seattle Monorail connects Seattle Center directly to Westlake Center in downtown.
The Kraken are the NHL's 32nd franchise and among the newest organizations in professional sports. The expansion roster has developed into a playoff-level team in a short time and the Seattle market - which hadn't had NHL hockey - has adopted the franchise with genuine enthusiasm.
