Nationals Park sits on the banks of the Anacostia River in the Navy Yard neighborhood, and the transformation of this area since the stadium opened is wild. What used to be an industrial wasteland is now one of DC's hottest neighborhoods, packed with restaurants, breweries, and rooftop bars. The Nats basically built a neighborhood around their stadium.
The 2019 World Series run was one of the greatest stories in baseball history. Down in the series, winning every road game, and then storming back to take the whole thing in Houston. When the Nats came home with the trophy, the parade down Constitution Avenue was one of the biggest parties DC has ever seen. "Baby Shark" was playing everywhere. It was beautiful chaos.
For food, the Ben's Chili Bowl half-smoke inside the stadium is a DC institution - a spicy, smoked sausage topped with chili that's been feeding the city since 1958. The Racing Presidents - where people in giant president costumes race around the warning track mid-game - is one of the best mid-game entertainments in baseball. (Let Teddy win.)
Before the game, the Navy Yard neighborhood is loaded. Bluejacket Brewery is right there with outstanding craft beer. The Yards Park waterfront is perfect for a pregame walk. After the game, head up to Capitol Hill or Adams Morgan if you want to keep the night going. Nationals Park took a forgotten corner of DC and turned it into one of the best ballpark neighborhoods in America. Not a bad legacy for a team that gave DC baseball back.
