The Emerson Colonial opened in 1900, which makes it the oldest continuously operating theater in Boston, and a recent top-to-bottom restoration brought back all the original grandeur after a stretch of closure. It sits in the Theater District, and its real claim to fame is as a pre-Broadway proving ground: shows do tryout runs and world premieres here before heading to New York.
Want proof? "Moulin Rouge! The Musical" had its world premiere on this very stage in 2018 before going on to clean up at the Tonys. Catching a show during its Boston run, before the rest of the country gets it, is one of the genuine perks of being here.
The restored interior is a stunner: ornate plasterwork, a grand proscenium arch, and roughly 1,700 seats across orchestra and balcony. It's intimate enough that even the back rows feel close to the action, which is part of why shows like to road-test here. The Theater District location puts you steps from a stack of pre-show dinner spots, so build in time to eat first and then settle into a room that's seen a century of opening nights.
