Chicago is the longest-running American musical in Broadway history, and after sitting in the audience for two hours, you'll understand exactly why it's still here. This show is slick, dark, funny, and dripping with jazz-age attitude. It's the musical equivalent of a smoky cocktail bar at midnight.
The story follows Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, two murderesses in 1920s Chicago who use the media circus around their trials to become celebrities. Sound familiar? The show was ahead of its time when it debuted, and somehow it gets more relevant every year. The satire about fame, corruption, and the justice system hits different in 2026 than it did in 1975, and that's saying something.
Bob Fosse's choreography is the backbone of the show. Every movement is deliberate, angular, and sensual. The dancers move like they're made of smoke. "Cell Block Tango" - where six women explain why they murdered their husbands - is one of the greatest production numbers in musical theater history. "All That Jazz" opens the show at full throttle and never lets up. "Razzle Dazzle" is pure theatrical confidence.
The minimalist staging is part of the appeal. There's no elaborate set, no Disney spectacle. It's a stage, some chairs, and a live orchestra sitting right behind the performers. The focus is entirely on the performers and the music, and it works because both are consistently excellent.
If you appreciate musical theater that doesn't hold your hand or soften its edges, Chicago is the show for you. It's sophisticated, it's sharp, and it'll make you want to learn how to do a Fosse walk.
