The Book of Mormon is the funniest thing on Broadway. Period. If you've ever watched South Park and thought "these guys should write a musical," well, Trey Parker and Matt Stone did exactly that, and it won nine Tony Awards. Because of course it did.
The premise is two young Mormon missionaries get sent to Uganda, and everything goes spectacularly wrong. It's offensive, it's outrageous, and it's somehow also kind of sweet? The genius of the show is that it makes fun of everyone - religion, musicals, cultural arrogance, well-meaning ignorance - but does it with songs so catchy you'll be humming them for weeks. "Hello!" is the perfect opening number. "Turn It Off" is a showstopper. And "Hasa Diga Eebowai" is... well, you'll have to see it. Let's just say it's the opposite of "Hakuna Matata."
The cast is always phenomenal. These performers are doing musical comedy at the highest level - belting notes, nailing physical comedy, and keeping a straight face during material that would make most people break. The commitment to the bit is what makes the whole thing work. If anyone on stage winked at the audience, the spell would break. Nobody winks.
Live, the show is wall-to-wall laughs. There's a joke or a gag every thirty seconds, and the second act goes to places you genuinely won't see coming. Even if you think you know what's going to happen because someone told you about it, it's funnier in person. Way funnier.
Fair warning: this show is not for your easily-offended aunt. Everyone else? Get your Book of Mormon tickets on Evil Tickets. Your face will hurt from laughing.
