Moulin Rouge! The Musical takes Baz Luhrmann's visually overwhelming movie and somehow cranks it up even higher for the stage. If you loved the film, imagine that energy - but live, in your face, with confetti falling from the ceiling and performers singing mashups of songs you forgot you loved. It's overwhelming in the absolute best way.

The set is spectacular. The theater itself gets transformed into the Moulin Rouge - a giant elephant, red drapes everywhere, a windmill, and a ceiling covered in lights and hearts. From the moment you walk in, before a single note is played, you're already inside the world. Most Broadway shows ask you to suspend disbelief. Moulin Rouge just builds the world around you and dares you not to feel something.

The music is a jukebox mashup of pop hits spanning decades. You'll hear Bowie, Gaga, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Elton John, and Adele - sometimes in the same song. The arrangements are clever enough that the mashups actually tell the story rather than just showing off. "Come What May" hits different when it's surrounded by modern pop songs that echo its themes. And "El Tango de Roxanne" live on stage is intense enough to leave you breathless.

The performances are athletic. The dancers are doing Moulin Rouge can-can kicks in corsets and heels, the leads are belting notes while navigating a stage that never stops moving, and the ensemble is working harder than any cast on Broadway. The physical demand of this show is absurd, and they make it look effortless.

If you want a Broadway experience that makes you feel alive, Moulin Rouge delivers. Find tickets on Evil Tickets and prepare to lose yourself for two and a half hours.
