The Mohawk is the kind of Austin venue that makes you understand exactly why people move to Austin for the music scene. Located on Red River Street - the beating heart of Austin's live music district - this indoor/outdoor club books an insane range of acts from indie to hip-hop to electronic and somehow makes all of them sound incredible. A band called Com Truise is playing here? Count us in immediately. That's the energy of this place.
The outdoor stage area is what really sets the Mohawk apart from every other venue in the city. It's an open-air setup with stadium-style seating on a hillside, so you can either get down in the pit close to the stage or grab a spot on the bleachers and watch from above with a Lone Star in hand and the Austin sky above you. The indoor room handles heavier and more intimate shows with equal quality, and both stages operate simultaneously during festivals and bigger events. During SXSW, the Mohawk is basically ground zero for discovering new music - the lineups are stacked from noon to 2 AM and the vibes are absolutely electric all day long.
Red River is loaded with venues and bars, so your pre-and-post-show options are literally endless. Cheer Up Charlies is right next door for craft cocktails and a more relaxed, inclusive scene. Swan Dive is across the street for a double feature of live music before or after your show. And if you need tacos (and you always need tacos when you're in Austin), Tamale House East on East 6th does breakfast tacos that will genuinely change your entire perspective on mornings.
If you're in Austin and you care about live music (and if you're in Austin, you absolutely better), the Mohawk is essential. Check what's playing on Evil Tickets.
