San Diego punches above its weight as a sports city - Petco Park alone would be enough reason to visit, and then there's a horse racing track that treats Opening Day like a city holiday. The sports options here are genuinely good and the weather for all of them is infuriatingly ideal.
The Ballpark Argument
Petco Park might be the most beautiful ballpark in Major League Baseball. That's not a hot take - it's just correct. The Padres play in the middle of the Gaslamp Quarter with the downtown skyline integrated into the outfield view, the Western Metal Supply Co. building built right into the left field corner, and a grass berm beyond center called The Park at the Park where you can spread a blanket and watch like you're at a picnic. The fish tacos at the concession stands are not an afterthought. Neither is the craft beer selection.
Pregame in the Gaslamp is half the experience - bars fill up from a couple hours before first pitch, and the whole neighborhood is walkable. Hodad's inside the park does a burger that would stand up on any street in San Diego. Come for a summer evening game, stay for the ninth inning lights.
Beyond Baseball
SDSU Aztecs moved into Snapdragon Stadium and brought serious college football energy back to Mission Valley. The San Diego Wave FC plays there too and has built one of the more intense NWSL fanbases in the country - games sell out, the supporters' section is loud, and the atmosphere rivals established MLS clubs.
The Extras
Del Mar Racetrack runs July through September - horse racing, sundresses, mint juleps, and a crowd that dresses up for Opening Day like it's a local holiday (because it is). The Holiday Bowl in late December brings college football fans from weather they'd rather not be in, and 72 degrees in late December genuinely never gets old.
