Tampa Bay won three championships in thirteen months between 2020 and 2021 - the Buccaneers, then the Lightning, then the Lightning again. The city hasn't quite gotten over it, which means the game day energy here runs hotter than you might expect from a Florida market. This is a real sports town. The trophies are proof.
The Ship Fires Real Cannons
Raymond James Stadium is where the Buccaneers play, and it has a full-size working pirate ship in the north end zone that fires actual cannons when Tampa scores. Not a prop. Not a metaphor. A ship, with cannons, that fires. The tailgate lots start hours before kickoff - get there early and find someone grilling. Sections 116-118 in the lower sideline bowl are worth the premium for the atmosphere on touchdowns.
Bolt Up
Lightning games at Amalie Arena are the best hockey atmosphere in the South, and it's not a close competition. The building gets loud, the production is serious, and a playoff run in Tampa is something the city participates in collectively - watch parties overflow every bar in Channelside. The Rays at Tropicana Field have been dealing with a stadium situation for years (a new facility is in the works), but the Trop has its own weird charm - including a stingray touch tank and catwalks that have literally deflected balls in play.
The Other Stuff Worth Showing Up For
Valspar Championship brings PGA Tour golf to Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor every March - walking the course in 75-degree weather watching the world's best golfers work is a deeply underrated sports afternoon. USF Bulls football brings college energy into the mix on Saturdays. Find Bucs, Lightning, and Rays tickets on Evil Tickets and check the Valspar calendar if you're visiting in March.
