The Belly Up has been at it since 1974, and the booking history is genuinely wild for a 450-cap room: James Brown, the Grateful Dead, Tom Waits, plus a steady run of recent indie favorites. It keeps landing names that should be playing rooms ten times the size, and that absurd talent-to-size ratio is the whole reason people happily make the trip out for it.

The setup is stripped down in the best possible way: a low stage, a good PA, and a crowd close enough to actually feel the performance instead of watching it on a screen. There's no bad spot to catch a major artist this close. The venue sits on South Cedros Avenue in Solana Beach's Cedros Design District, so the shop-lined street gives you somewhere to wander before doors.

It's north of downtown San Diego, and you can get there completely car-free on the Coaster commuter train if you don't feel like driving home after.
