Atlanta's concert scene rewards you for knowing where to look. The tourist move is State Farm Arena or Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the stadium-filling headliners - fine, we'll allow it. But the real show is usually happening somewhere with stained glass and a wraparound balcony.
Here's where to actually go.
The Church of Live Music
The Tabernacle is a converted 1910 Baptist church in downtown - stained glass windows, a wraparound balcony, just over 2,500 people - and whoever's on that stage looks like they're playing a wedding reception in the best possible way. Grab a balcony rail spot early and you're set for the night. It's one of the best mid-size rooms in the country and Atlanta takes it for granted.
For an even more spectacular room, Fox Theatre Atlanta is in its own category. Egyptian ballroom architecture, a ceiling that replicates a night sky with clouds that actually drift across it during intermission, velvet seats, and a drop-down chandelier. The Fox hosts arena-level touring acts in a 4,600-seat room, which means you're never that far from the stage.
Where the Locals Go
Terminal West in West Midtown is the move for smaller shows. Old warehouse bones, exposed brick, a rooftop bar, and a sound system that was clearly somebody's obsession. The neighborhood is still figuring itself out (in a good way), and the pre-show bar crawl along Howell Mill Road is half the fun.
Little Five Points is where you go when you want something weirder and cheaper. A handful of smaller stages and bars run live music on weeknights - nothing fancy, lots of local acts, and the crowd actually listens. Grab a beer at The Porter Beer Bar on North Highland before you wander in.
Pre-Show Protocol
Getting around Atlanta is easier than people expect - MARTA hits downtown and Midtown just fine. For Fox shows, park in the Peachtree Street garages and eat somewhere along the strip first. Ecco on 7th is worth the splurge; Tin Drum is the move when you're running late. Browse Atlanta shows on Evil Tickets and leave room in the budget for a round at the venue bar.
