Boston Concerts & Live Music

Boston takes its concerts personally. Blame the colleges, blame the cold winters, blame the fact that there's always something good on at eleven venues within walking distance of each other. The options are legitimately overwhelming, so here's the breakdown.

The Historic Rooms

Orpheum Theatre opened in 1852. The seats are famously tiny, and the standing room floor is where every great show in Boston history has happened. Sinatra played the Orpheum. Radiohead played the Orpheum. You'll stand on that floor and feel the weight of that history for about three minutes before the band starts and you forget everything else.

House of Blues Boston on Lansdowne Street has its own thing going on - it's right in the Fenway entertainment district, so the pregame and postgame scenes are built in. Get there early for a front section spot, or go up to the Foundation Room on the third level for a more relaxed vibe with a full view of the floor.

The New Room Worth Knowing

Roadrunner in Brighton opened in 2021 and is the best mid-size room to open in Boston in years. Five thousand capacity, incredible sound, multiple bar levels, and an aesthetic that actually thought about what it's like to watch a show from the back. It's in Brighton just off Comm Ave - grab dinner at Tony's beforehand and walk over. If a band you like is playing Roadrunner, do not sleep on it.

Summer and the Streets

Leader Bank Pavilion on the waterfront is summer-only and worth scheduling a trip around. The sunset views from the lawn seats are genuinely ridiculous, the outdoor air does something good to a live show, and the Seaport neighborhood has enough solid restaurants that you can make a full evening of it. Drink some chowder at Legal Harborside first. You're in Boston.

The college scene (Allston, Cambridge, Jamaica Plain) has smaller stages worth a weeknight gamble - Charlie's Kitchen in Cambridge has a basement stage that's launched more bands than anyone's keeping track of. Evil Tickets covers the bigger rooms when a show you want sells through the box office.
