Washington D.C. Theater & Comedy

Washington D.C. Theater & Comedy

DC's performing arts scene has some of the most historically significant venues in America - one of them is a theater where a president was assassinated that still puts on shows - and it also has one of the best-kept secrets in free live performance anywhere in the country. Both of those things deserve your attention.

The Surreal One

Ford's Theatre is still an active theater where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865. They still put on shows. You can sit in that balcony. The National Historic Site designation means there's a museum in the basement with rangers on staff, but the main floor is a real stage with real productions - predominantly American stories, historical dramas, musicals that engage with the national narrative. Watching a production in that room, under those lights, in that specific space, is genuinely surreal in a way that no description prepares you for. Go. It is not gimmicky. It is completely serious.

The Potomac Pillar

The Kennedy Center is the other anchor - three main stages on the Potomac riverfront, home to the National Symphony Orchestra, Washington National Opera, and a Broadway touring program that pulls the major productions. Here is the thing almost nobody knows: the Millennium Stage on the Terrace level hosts a free performance every single evening at 6pm. No ticket required. It's been running since 1997, the quality is consistently high, and it is one of the best free things in DC. The rooftop views of the Potomac from the Grand Foyer are worth arriving early for regardless of the show.

The Serious Work

Arena Stage in Southwest DC is the heavyweight for American theater - major premieres, revivals, bold work in a three-theater complex right on the waterfront. Shakespeare Theatre Company does classical work at a level that would embarrass most American cities. Woolly Mammoth is where you go when you want theater that makes you uncomfortable in a productive way - they mean it, and so does the audience.

DC Improv in Dupont Circle is the city's flagship stand-up room - touring headliners, good production, the whole classic comedy club setup done properly. Your favorite comedian has worked this stage. Post-show on Connecticut Avenue has options in every direction. Find DC theater and comedy tickets on Evil Tickets and see something worth thinking about on the Metro home.
