Washington D.C. Event & Entertainment Guide
The Sound
D.C. invented hardcore punk. Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Fugazi - they all came out of this city, and that DIY spirit never really left. The 9:30 Club on V Street is consistently rated one of the best live music venues in America, and for good reason: the sightlines are perfect, the sound is dialed, and the booking is chef's-kiss eclectic. If you only hit one venue in D.C., make it this one.
The Anthem on the Southwest Waterfront is the bigger sibling - 6,000 capacity, right on the water, opened in 2017 and immediately became the city's premier large venue. The Wharf neighborhood around it is worth exploring before the show. And for the intimate stuff, Songbyrd in Adams Morgan and Union Stage near the Waterfront keep the smaller acts booked tight.
Game Day
Capital One Arena sits right in the middle of Chinatown and hosts the Wizards and Capitals. Caps playoff hockey in this building is genuinely deafening - the 2018 Cup run turned the entire city into a hockey town overnight, and the energy never fully came back down. The Nationals play at Nationals Park on the Anacostia River, where the stadium food is actually good (seriously, get the Chesapeake fries from Box Frites). And the Commanders are out at Northwest Stadium - the tailgating scene carries hard regardless of the team's record.
Eat This
Ben's Chili Bowl on U Street has been open since 1958 and survived riots, recessions, and Metro construction. Order the half-smoke - a slightly spicier, coarser hot dog smothered in chili. It's D.C.'s signature food, and Bill Cosby's photo used to be on the wall but the half-smoke remains undefeated regardless. Mumbo sauce - that sweet, tangy, bright-red condiment that goes on wings and fries - is a D.C. original you won't find anywhere else. Get wings from any carryout in Northeast and ask for extra mumbo.
For the sit-down experience, Le Diplomate on 14th Street does a French bistro brunch that'll make you forget you're not in Paris. Rasika on Penn Quarter has Indian food good enough to pull congresspeople across the aisle - the palak chaat is the order.
After Dark
U Street was called "Black Broadway" in the early 1900s - Duke Ellington grew up here. Today the strip runs from 9:30 Club down to Ben's Chili Bowl and is packed with bars. The Gibson is a hidden cocktail bar (you have to call ahead for a reservation to an unmarked door) where the drinks are worth the ceremony. For a divey counterpoint, Dan's Cafe lets you pour your own drinks from squeeze bottles. It's chaos. You'll love it.
Monuments, mumbo sauce, and some of the best small venues in the country - find your D.C. tickets on Evil Tickets.
When to Go
Cherry blossom season in late March and April kicks off the outdoor event calendar - the city comes alive and concerts on the National Mall start filling up. Summer means free concerts on the Mall, rooftop bars on the Waterfront, and the city running at full speed. Fall is college football and NFL overlap with the Commanders playing at Northwest Stadium. Winter is Caps and Wizards season at Capital One Arena - playoff hockey in this building is as loud as it gets.
