The Fox Theatre is Detroit's most spectacular venue, and that's not a close contest. The restoration work done in the 1980s brought the 1928 movie palace back to its original glory - the ornate lobby, the six-story auditorium, and the intricate decorative details throughout the building are extraordinary. At 5,100 seats it's larger than most theaters that use the word "intimate," but the multi-level seating brings the upper balcony into surprisingly good proximity to the stage for a space this size.
Broadway tours, major concert acts, stand-up comedy, and special events all rotate through the Fox's calendar. Sound quality is good throughout the house - the acoustics were originally designed for live performance. The Grand Circus Park neighborhood around the venue has some good options for pre-show dinner. Parking structures on Woodward and in the surrounding blocks handle the event traffic reasonably well.
