Houston sports culture has a few things going for it that don't get enough national attention: a baseball stadium with a retractable roof (crucial), a rodeo that's actually the best in the world, and a tailgate culture in the NRG parking lot that people treat like a competitive sport.
The September Test
Texans games at NRG Stadium are a test of your dedication in September - the opener can hit 95 degrees with 80% humidity, and the roof doesn't cool the lower bowl the way you'd hope. The tailgate culture compensates: the NRG lots are enormous and the pregame has its own logic. People bring grills, smokers, and setups that took all morning to assemble. Eat well in the lot and then pick your battles inside.
Minute Maid
Minute Maid Park solved Houston summers with a retractable roof, which means a July Astros game is completely comfortable and nobody has to make weather decisions in advance. The Crawford Boxes in left field are the architectural signature - a short porch that catches fly balls and has produced more dramatic home runs than seems statistically fair. The brisket nachos at the Hay Merchant stand inside the park are as good as they sound. Order them before the third inning when the lines are manageable.
Toyota Center downtown handles Rockets games in a compact, electric room right in the middle of the city. Parking is a solvable problem and the pregame bar scene on Main Street is already waiting for you. The Red Smoke BBQ stand on the main concourse is the correct food call.
The Rodeo
Houston Rodeo runs three weeks from late February into March at NRG Stadium, and if you've never been to a rodeo before, this is the one - it's the largest in the world. Championship bull riding during the day, a major concert every night (country, hip-hop, regional acts, genuinely diverse lineup), a carnival midway, and more fried food options than you can address in a single visit. Go twice. The first time you're figuring it out. The second time you know what to do. Evil Tickets has Astros and Rockets seats whenever the schedule lines up.
